I recently was at the MSU Union and saw a few bands play in the Main Lounge, and this was again put on by the University Activities Board, and one band that I could not stop listening to was Breathe Owl Breathe. I had never heard of them before and I don't know how this could have been possible, they are so innovative, they use interesting instruments that I have never seen and they even use children's toys for sound effects which is something that I just never really thought about doing. I liked them even enough to buy one of their c.d.'s, something I almost never do. One of their songs, called "Last Dance" I could just listen to over and over and I do! It has like a simple beat with a beautiful women's voice singing and a man talking at the same time, but not all throughout the song, it just all goes together so perfectly. I would like to put some of the lyrics on here just because I love them that much.

Breathe Owl Breathe - Last Dance (Lyrics) (or at least this is what I think is being sung)

I like to rollerskate with the books on tape
And my headphones are like a big drone
And the parking lot looks like an open field
Oh the Field
This Dance....ah we ah we ah we

Wilma Arrested
Her only thought was
Will the others find me here
I hope not
Counting outloud turns the wind into a math equation

.....................

This is a just a few of things they are saying, it is all just so creative, I love this band and everything they do, I hope you give them a chance and listen to them, it will be worth it, I have one of their c.d.'s and I can't stop listening to it.

Well it's 6 in the AM and I can't sleep. I have one more final today and one on Friday. Whew what a semester!! Between just my normal classes plus my internship, Advertising Clubs, etc. I feel like I haven't had time to just hang out. The one good thing about going home is getting to see all my old friends and the fam of course. Plus my birthday.
Which leads to my rant.

My birthday is on Christmas. This usually leads to one of 2 comments.

1. "Oooh! A Christmas Baby!"

2. "Ouch! Do you get ripped off on presents?"

The answer to both of which is "yes."

Now don't get me wrong. I love my birthday. But the thing is is that no one wants to go out and celebrate with you. I don't even think the bars are open on Christmas. No restaurants. Nothing. So my birthday is usually spent something like this.

1. Everyone opens their presents.

2. My dad gets crabby about something, life, to counteract the good time everyone else is having, whatever.

3. Church

4. Breakfast at the only place that is open -IHOP.

5. Watch A Christmas Story 3-4 times.

6. Do my birthday stuff (which by the way my presents are always wrapped in Christmas paper.)

7. Go to bed. Because what more would a spankin' new 23 yr. old want to do on her birthday then go to bed at 9 o'clock.

It's not all bad of course. My parents usually try to make up for the presents that I'm not getting from everyone else. But just a reminder: If you have friends whose birthdays happen to fall around the holiday season, make time to go out with them for a beer!

Arrested Development

I have asked dozens of people about their familiarity with one of my now favorite television shows, Arrested Development. A majority of the people I asked have never heard of the show to this day and this article is for all those who do not know of the greatness of this short lived show. This show was first aired on Fox in 2003 and was so brilliant that it won and was nominated for several Golden Globes and Emmy’s. However, although it was critically acclaimed, it only made it 3 seasons and the third and final season was only half of the normal length. However for many reasons, one of which is that the show had only a small amount of advertising and therefore not many people knew about it. By the time I was introduced to Arrested Development a few years ago, it was already taken off the air. I was lucky enough to have a roommate who owned all of the seasons and when I watched it I could not keep my eyes away from the TV, my fingers away from the remote, and the laughter from stopping.
In case you have never seen the show, it is a comedy about the Bluth family, the most dysfunctional family that ever lived (on television) and them having to deal with life and each other day in and day out. There are almost too many characters to keep track of, and they are all so amazing in the show that I don’t know if I could pick a favorite if I had to. First, there is Michael Bluth (played by Jason Bateman), who is the main character holding everyone together, his son George Michael Bluth (played by Micheal Cera), his sister Lindsey Bluth Fünke (played by Portia de Rossi), her husband Tobias Fünke (played by David Cross) and their daughter Maeby Fünke (Alia Shawkat). And who could forget Micheal Bluth’s two brothers Gob Bluth (played by Will Arnett) and Buster Bluth (played by Tony Hale) and their parents Lucille Bluth (played by Jessica Walter) and George Bluth Senior (played by Jeffrey Tambor). Lastly Arrested Development’s narrator is Ron Howard. Many of these actors and actresses are quite famous, and these are some of their best roles. Whoever casted all of these individuals really knew what they were doing, none of these performers could have been replaced for anyone else. There are also a ton of very famous guest stars including Liza Minnelli, Judy Greer, Amy Poehler, Charlize Theron, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Scott Baio and Ben Stiller. You just have to watch it to understand how amazing and perfect the show is.
The only problem that I have with Arrested Development was that I was never truly finished with the show, I was not ready for it to end and it did, I wish it had not ended. I am most looking forward to a rumored Arrested Development movie, at first it was just a rumor on the internet but when I recently checked on imdb.com, there was information about it, I did not see any actual information proving there will be a movie to finish the series, but that gives me hope that it will continue and become a movie. The hardest part will be getting everyone to sign on for it, because it has been 2 years since the 3rd season ended. Also both Jason Bateman and Michael Cera have become bigger stars; both actors have been in many high grossing films recently. I don’t think they will be too good for the movie, just getting everyone to commit is the difficult part. Somewhere inside me I just know that it will happen, and it when it does, as long as everyone that was in the original series is on and it has the same directors and writers, I know it will not short of epic. Look out for Arrested Development THE MOVIE!

OMG!

I still have to carve a crazy pumpkin!

Frontier Ruckus

This past weekend I went to the Homecoming Folk Festival on Friday October 3, 2008 in the MSU Union Ballroom. It was an event that was put on by the University Activities Board (UAB) and featured three bands: Southeast Engine, Chris Bathgate, and Frontier Ruckus. I went to it without any expectations. However, I ended up enjoying all the music, however the band that I thought was the most folk-ish and original was Frontier Ruckus. There were many people that came, but it seemed that the room filled up much more when Frontier Ruckus began playing. As the members of the band walked around the crowd and up the stairs of the stage, I stood up and counted 10 of them. I have not heard of too many bands that had more then 5 band members. That was the first unique thing that I noticed. Now, I am an avid listener of indie and folk music, and I have never actually seen a small local band that has really found a sound that is worth playing. When they began playing, my ears opened and I could not stop listening. I was completely focused on each and every member of the band and trying to figure out how they were creating this angelic sound. It was easily seen that the band was enjoying themselves on stage and I was having an equally enjoyable time. I didn't know what the names of the songs were, but they did not need names, maybe they possibly even can't be named they were so remarkable. I would recommend anyone who even enjoys music in the slightest to test out this band and listen to a few songs. I enjoyed Frontier Ruckus so much that I immediately wanted to purchase their newly release compact disc named The Orion Songbook. This is something I don't ordinarily do too much because of my small amount of funds. However, I had not brought enough money to buy it but I hope to locate it and listen to it as soon as possible. This band is something unparalleled, even their website is artistically unique, check it out for more information: http://www.frontierruckus.com/.

Halloween!!!

What's everyone being?!?
